The Sonic Adventure Autodemo is a prototype version of Sonic Adventure, as the name suggests, the prototype is a collection of cutscenes and AI gameplay that was shown off by Japanese retailers to promote the game. Early “Sonic Adventure” Promo Disc and “Sonic Adventure 2” Pre-Release Disc Discovered

Members of the Sonic Retro forums, known as “Orengefox” and “Jen” have recently announced that they have obtained two very unique pieces of Sega Dreamcast history. One of them being a non-playable promotional demonstration of the original “Sonic Adventure” title, and the other being a prototype (possible press copy or pre-release) edition of “Sonic Adventure 2”. Both discs have been made available for download, and we have some information about the titles that may very well be of some interest to our readers.

The disc for the original “Sonic Adventure” comes to us in a non-playable automatically running demonstration form. Considering that the programming shows a date of October 16, 1998, this is one of the earliest copies of the game in any form that has ever been made public. The disc states that it is a “Not-For-Sale Promotional AutoDemo”, indicating that it show demonstrations and cut scenes of the game by using original game mechanics, as opposed to just being a video clip playing at a continuous loop.

Orengefox talks about the possible origins of the disc being linked to the Tokyo International Forum (which occurred on August 22, 1998) on the Sonic Retro Forums:

“At first I thought this build was like a bridge between the Tokyo International Forum and the first release in Japan. It might be earlier than we think. Jen will tell you in greater detail. In any case, this build has got loads of differences from the final from what Jen and I could see. And that’s just scraping the surface, we haven’t even got to the meat and potatoes yet (I.e. all the files stored away). It can run perfectly fine on hardware. Not so much the case on emulation as the timing on the demonstrations goes off.”

The Sonic Adventure 1 game also features Shadow’s original name Terios, in the internal file list. In addition to that, there is a lot of great stuff hiding beneath the surface. A multitude of musical differences have been discovered, and multiple entirely different, previously unseen level maps have been unleashed here, not to mention 2 test maps, shown below, which have already been ported to the PC version of “Sonic Adventure DX”.

Another amazing find on this beta edition of “Sonic Adventure”, would be the early version of Windy Valley. Both of the test levels, as well as the prototype of what would become Windy Valley, could very well indicate that the game could have been much more momentum based, and less storylined that when we got in the long-run:

The “Sonic Adventure 2” demo build dates us back to May 3, 2001, just under a month before the original Japanese release. This disc is quite different from the original “Sonic Adventure” AutoDemo, since this disc features three playable levels: One for each Sonic and Shadow, and a third one to show off the two player mode. This particular edition is very similar to what North American retailers and press received, but obviously this one was directed at the Japanese audience.

Another quote from Orengefox, talking about the game play modes on this disc:

“Taking the build date of this pre-release into consideration, there’s not much in the way of differences. The menu selection is different of course (it’s using the leftover stuff found in the final version). You choose either Sonic, Shadow or 2P Sonic vs. Shadow. Sonic’s level is City Escape. Shadow’s level is Radical Highway. Don’t know what’s in 2P Sonic vs. Shadow as there was no second controller set. I want to say there’s something is odd about City Escape aside from Big the Cat not being there. Radical Highway looks the same (maybe it’s just me). Some demonstrations don’t work right even on hardware etc.”

Both of these unique finds have been made available to the public for download, in both BIN and ISO formats. As stated earlier, these discs prefer original hardware as opposed to playing via emulation methods. Just pick your poison, and give it a spin!
